Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is an autonomous body established under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare to regulate food safety.

Types of FSSAI License

  • Registration: Petty food businesses (turnover < ₹12 lakh)
  • State License: Medium businesses (turnover ₹12 lakh - ₹20 crore)
  • Central License: Large businesses (turnover > ₹20 crore) or importers

FSSAI License Number Structure

14-digit number structure: 1st digit (1/2 for registration/license), next 2 digits (state code), next 2 (year of enrollment), next 3 (registration authority), next 6 (permit number), last 1 (license type).

Validity and Renewal

License valid for 1-5 years as chosen. Renewal must be applied 30 days before expiry. Late renewal attracts penalty.
