You are halfway through AOC-4, or a CA has asked for an “NPCS code”, and the eight-digit number you need is in a PDF you have never opened. Worse, half the guides online mix it up with the NIC code, the two-digit “main division” in SPICe+, and the six-digit SAC code from GST. They are four different things.
This guide sorts them out: what the NPCS code is, which MCA form actually asks for it (not the one most people expect), how the digits work, how to find yours, and what happens if you get it wrong.
What the NPCS Code Is
NPCS stands for National Product Classification for Services Sector. It is published by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), not by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. MCA borrows it: AOC-4 tells you to refer to “National Product Classification for Services (NPCS) for Services codes issued by Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation”.
The key word is product. NIC classifies what kind of business you run. NPCS classifies the individual services you sell. A company has one NIC division but may report several NPCS codes, one per line of revenue.
How the Code Is Built
MoSPI describes the structure in one line: “99 + five digited CPC code + one digit for Indian requirements”. The 99 is the HS chapter that WCO leaves free for each country. The middle five digits come from the UN Central Product Classification, and the last digit lets India split a CPC sub-class into up to nine variants. Eight digits, the same length as an ITC (HS) code, which is why AOC-4 accepts either in one field.
| Level | Digits | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Section | 1 (5 to 9) | 8 = Business and production services |
| Heading | 4 | 9983 |
| Group | 5 | 99831 |
| Class | 6 | 998314 = IT design and development services |
| Sub-class | 7 | 9983141 = IT design and development for applications |
| Product code | 8 | 99831411 = Design and development of a web page including content |
Section 5 is construction; 6 is trade, accommodation, food, transport and utilities; 7 is finance, real estate and leasing; 8 is business and production services, where almost every startup lands; 9 is community, social and personal services.
Where MCA Actually Asks for It
Here is the part most guides get wrong. Neither SPICe+ nor FiLLiP has an NPCS field. SPICe+ Part A (name reservation) asks for a two-digit Main Division of Industrial Activity from a drop-down; Part B asks for a Business / Profession Code in its PAN section, only where the income is from business or profession. That list (Annexure B of the instruction kit) is a condensed NIC list, and for a company the code becomes characters 2 to 6 of your CIN. FiLLiP asks for the LLP’s main industrial activity the same way.
The NPCS code turns up after incorporation, in the annual filings:
- AOC-4, Segment II (principal products or services). Two fields per line of business: “Product or service category code (ITC/NPCS 4 digit code)” and “Highest turnover contributing product or service code (ITC/NPCS 8 digit code)”, each with a description and turnover in rupees. Goods get an ITC (HS) code, services get an NPCS code.
- MGT-7 and MGT-7A, Part II (principal business activities). No NPCS here. The instruction kit says the activity codes “are based upon NIC-2008 codes”, selected from a drop-down, up to ten activities with a percentage of turnover each.
So a private company touches three codes a year: the main division in its CIN, NIC-2008 codes in MGT-7, and NPCS or ITC codes in AOC-4. If you are still at name approval, our SPICe+ and RUN guide walks the Part B fields in order, and the LLP registration guide does the same for FiLLiP.
NIC Code vs NPCS Code
| NIC 2008 | NPCS | |
|---|---|---|
| Classifies | The economic activity of the business | The service sold |
| Publisher | CSO, MoSPI | CSO, MoSPI |
| Structure | Section A to U, then 2-digit division, 3-digit group, 4-digit class, 5-digit sub-class | 99 + 5-digit UN CPC code + 1 Indian digit = 8 digits |
| Covers goods? | Yes, manufacturing is divisions 10 to 33 | No, goods use ITC (HS) |
| MCA forms | SPICe+ Part A and FiLLiP (condensed 2-digit list), MGT-7, MGT-7A | AOC-4 Segment II, XBRL financials |
| Elsewhere | Udyam registration | Statistical surveys; GST uses the related 6-digit SAC instead |
| Codes per company | One principal activity | One per product or service line |
One trap: the MCA incorporation list uses older two-digit numbering, so software is 72 (“Computer and related activities”) in the SPICe+ kit’s Annexure B but division 62 (“Computer programming, consultancy and related activities”) in NIC 2008 and MGT-7. Both are right in their own form.
How to Find the Right NPCS Code
- Open the official list. MoSPI hosts the NPCS PDF on mospi.gov.in under National Product Classification, and MCA’s XBRL FAQ points to its own copy, NPCS_codes.pdf, under Important Downloads.
- Go by section. Startups are almost always in Section 8 (headings 9981 to 9989); restaurants, hotels, retail and transport are Section 6; construction is Section 5.
- Search the PDF with a plain noun, not marketing language. “Consulting”, “advertising”, “software”, “accommodation” and “meal serving” all hit; “D2C”, “startup” and “fintech” do not.
- Note the 4-digit heading and the 8-digit product code together. AOC-4 asks for both, and the heading is the first four digits of the code.
- Match revenue, not ambition. The 8-digit field is for the single highest-turnover service in the year reported. If you also sell goods, that row gets an ITC (HS) code.
NPCS Codes for Common Businesses
Every code below comes from the MoSPI NPCS list and the NIC 2008 manual. The 8-digit code is one example inside the class; read the neighbouring lines before you commit, because the last digit is where the list splits into variants.
| Business | NPCS class, example 8-digit code, and NIC 2008 division / class |
|---|---|
| Custom software and web development | NPCS 998314 IT design and development services Example: 99831411 Design and development of a web page NIC 2008: 62 / 6201 Computer programming activities |
| IT consulting and support | NPCS 998313 IT consulting and support services Example: 99831311 Consultancy on hardware and software requirements NIC 2008: 62 / 6202 Computer consultancy and computer facilities management |
| Management consultancy | NPCS 998311 Management consulting and management services Example: 99831110 Strategic management consulting NIC 2008: 70 / 7020 Management consultancy activities |
| Accounting and bookkeeping firm | NPCS 998222 Accounting and bookkeeping services Example: 99822210 Accounting services NIC 2008: 69 / 6920 Accounting, bookkeeping and auditing; tax consultancy |
| Advertising agency | NPCS 998361 Advertising services Example: 99836110 Full service advertising NIC 2008: 73 / 7310 Advertising |

| General store retail | NPCS 996210 Non-specialized store retail trade services Example: Check the MCA list (MoSPI prints 9962100) NIC 2008: 47 / 4711 Retail sale in non-specialized stores, food predominating |
| Road freight transport | NPCS 996511 Road transport services of freight Example: 99651130 Intermodal containers NIC 2008: 49 / 4923 Freight transport by road |
| Residential builder | NPCS 995411 General construction of residential buildings Example: 99541110 One- and two-dwelling buildings NIC 2008: 41 / 4100 Construction of buildings |
| Manufacturer (any product) | NPCS No NPCS code; use ITC (HS) Example: e.g. 8516 / 85163100 electro-thermic hair dryers NIC 2008: 10 to 33, by product |
Trading companies sit in Section 6: wholesale under heading 9961 and retail under 9962, split by product line. Once a company is registered, the activity code in its CIN appears in its master data, so you can see how similar companies classified themselves with a free WeeDoo company search.
What Happens If You Pick the Wrong Code
- The form will not reject it. AOC-4 asks for a valid ITC or NPCS code, a description and the turnover against it; nothing checks whether the code fits your business. The number of categories is mandatory in the form revised in 2025.
- You can fix it next year. AOC-4 is filed every financial year with its own product and service table. There is no “change NPCS code” form because the code is reported, not registered.
- The main division in your CIN is stickier. Practitioners report that an objects change filed through MGT-14 that moves a company into a different industry code shows up as a new CIN in MCA’s master data, with no fresh certificate of incorporation; other advisers say the code never changes. Merely adding an object does not touch it. Ask your CS first.
- Downstream registrations do not read it. Udyam uses NIC 2008 codes (up to ten activities), and GST uses the 6-digit SAC maintained by CBIC. What does get noticed is inconsistency: an AOC-4 that says advertising, an MGT-7 that says software and a GST registration that says restaurants will draw questions in due diligence.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the NPCS code the same as the NIC code?
No. NIC 2008 is a five-digit activity classification. NPCS is an eight-digit product classification of the services you sell. Both come from CSO at MoSPI; MCA uses NIC in SPICe+, FiLLiP and MGT-7 and NPCS in AOC-4.
Do I need an NPCS code to file SPICe+?
No. SPICe+ Part A asks for a two-digit Main Division of Industrial Activity and Part B, if applicable, a Business / Profession Code. You first need an NPCS code for your first AOC-4 after the financial year ends.
How many digits is an NPCS code?
Eight: 99, the five-digit UN CPC code, then one digit for Indian sub-categories. AOC-4 asks for the four-digit heading and the eight-digit product code separately.
Is the NPCS code the same as the SAC code on my GST invoices?
No. SAC is six digits (99 plus four) and is maintained by CBIC for GST rates. NPCS is eight digits and is maintained by MoSPI. Both start from the UN CPC, so the first six digits often line up, but do not assume it.
Before You File
Pick the main division for SPICe+ or FiLLiP on the revenue you expect in the first two years, because for a company it lives in your CIN. Bookmark the NPCS PDF for AOC-4 season and note both the heading and the product code. If you would rather hand the incorporation to someone, WeeDoo’s company registration service handles the forms and the codes; once the company is live you can check its master data free.
